What do you see as the overall role of the circuit court judge in Vanderburgh County?

We must become more efficient for the parties, the litigants and the community at large. Recovery housing residents in Springfield enjoy a comfortable home with ample privacy as well as spacious common areas. There is a large parking area behind the building, as well as an expansive side yard available for activities and enjoyment. A panel of judges appointed Briles to serve as a Vanderburgh County Superior Court magistrate in 2019, a post she has held since. Briles has an extensive and varied legal career that traces back to her time as a student at the University of Southern Indiana. She has clerked for an Indiana Court of Appeals judge, served as a deputy city attorney and practiced family law at Ziemer, Stayman, Weitzel & Shoulders. We refer guests to our local care providers when they need a higher level of care, and work to maintain strong referral relationships with clinicians, case workers, court officers, and others in the field. Most of our guests are referred by other organizations in the continuum of care. We have strong relationships with clinical facilities, correctional facilities, and community organizations.

The judges are going to be the deciders of whether that evidence is scientifically reliable or not, so it is important for us to have a basic understanding of how these tools work. We are generally prohibited from doing independent research into these kinds of evidentiary issues. It’s good to have a solid foundation, but ultimately, it’s going to come down to the evidence that’s presented in any given case. I have not had any conversations with any other potential bidders, because I think that if we’re going to have that process, the judge shouldn’t come into it with predetermined notions. I began my career as a deputy prosecutor in the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office. I started my time there prosecuting primarily high-level drug crimes and eventually was moved into prosecuting sex crimes and homicides.

Ultimately, if there was going to be a change that was made, that would require some logistics, and so you want to make sure that if there was going to be a change made, that you have something that’s set up — and that may take time to accomplish. But, I’m definitely Granada House Review open to hearing from other businesses or service providers who would be willing to provide those monitoring services at a reduced rate to defendants and the county. Usually, we can call you to conduct a phone screen within a few hours of receiving your application. A decision on your application will be made during the phone screen, in most cases. We carefully screen each applicant and conduct a telephone screen prior to approval to ensure a good fit in our homes.
